No fewer than thirteen individuals lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.
A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid pace, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in full adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
